Early praise: "Tyson paints image consultant Allison Campbell with an intricate brush, telling an emotional, riveting, and gripping story in Dying Brand. I loved it! A must read for mystery lovers." -- Gretchen Archer, USA Today Bestselling Author "Narratives alternate in this continually shifting novel, as characters evaluate their relationships with old lovers and are surprised by new ones. The main plot holds all of the stories together though, and it is Allison who drives the mystery with her own compulsions and vulnerability...This is truly a unique and enjoyable series of reinvention and, oddly enough, acceptance." -- Kings River Life Magazine “Engaging, intelligent, and riveting, Dying Brand kept me on the edge of my seat—guessing until the end. Bravo!” –Mollie Cox Bryan, Author of the Agatha Nominated Cumberland Creek Series “Fans of Wendy Tyson’s ingenious mystery series will gobble up this newest addition. Dying Brand delivers a complex puzzle mystery with a colorful cast and plenty of twists. Image consultant Allison Campbell rushes back into action, and readers will find themselves racing with her to the surprising conclusion of this fast-paced whodunit.” – Carla Norton, Bestselling Author of The Edge of Normal

Book Summary

He may very well be the perfect ex... Isaac McKnight has had enough loss in his life to know never to take anything for granted. So when the perfectly-imperfect-woman-for-him puts an end to their relationship out of the blue, it's Isaac that makes sure they remain friends. Now a year later, whether it's at his gym or her brewpub, or the dog park they visit every weekend--though neither of them own a dog--he and Xoey are steadily getting sucked deeper into buddy-zone galaxy, with its dangerous proximity to watch-me-settle-down-with-someone-else abyss. It's a reality he's resigned himself to. That is...until one drunken confession changes everything. But she's looking for the perfect 'oh'... For Xoey Montenegro, history has taught her that sometimes, it's Prince Charming who vanishes without a trace. And fairytale love? Highly overrated. Heck, give her a real and perfect 'oh' over that fantasy any day. So as far as rock-solid tequila-fueled plans for her love life go, coming up with a match-finding formula based on the qualities of the men responsible for her three most epic ohs seems brilliant. Except for the fact that one-third of her genius little man-quation is all about her friend Isaac. Actually, more than a third if Xoey were being honest with herself--which she's not. Because full honesty would require thinking not just about how perfect Isaac really is, but also about how perfect the fourth epic oh she's kept buried deep in her past once was. An easy enough thing to keep ignoring...until her past isn't past tense anymore.

Excerpt

“The man ate his Caesar salad with a knife and fork, Isaac.” Isaac McKnight tried—really tried—not to grin over that one but he was wholly unsuccessful. “I’m sure that’s not nearly as pretentious as it probably looked,” he reasoned graciously, before adding without any remorse whatsoever, “Or maybe the good doctor has been hiding a really small mouth under that bushy beard, and he needs to take dainty little bites.” Yep, just call him Saint Isaac, Patron of Grace. Xoey’s immediate burst of laughter over the phone line, which neither confirmed nor denied his guess, instantly had Isaac wondering which of her killer smiles she was wearing right now. He’d bet good money it was the one that lit up those deep mahogany-rich bedroom eyes of hers with pure mischief—the one that hinted her own thoughts were at least twice as sinful as anyone else’s in the room. And three times as unapologetic. God, he loved that smile. For a few quality seconds with that smile, he’d gladly pony up with all the zingers he’d been storing regarding her most recent Mr. Wrong. But he managed to restrain himself. The last thing Isaac needed was to give karma more reasons to run his ass over. He was, after all, one of Xoey’s Mr. Wrongs as well. The reminder was an effective buzzkill that silenced the ticker tape parade that had been playing in his head all morning over Xoey’s latest love life development…an extraordinary showing of self-control for him that lasted a whole ten seconds. Maybe eleven. A personal best. With that new shoulder-patting record under his belt, he was already reaching up to switch the phone call over to his truck’s Bluetooth so he could listen to Xoey’s deal-breaking grievances from her date last night the way it was truly meant to be heard. In stereo. What could he say? The woman brought out all his ruthless, miserable-sonofabitch possessive tendencies. As far as he was concerned, hearing Xoey’s throaty voice take over his truck’s speakers with a list of reasons why the ‘third date’ she’d gone out on last night would in fact not be resulting in a fourth date—aka sex—with the pharmacist she’d met a few weeks back? Grammy-worthy music to his ears. He simply didn’t see himself evolving any time soon.

“No need to be digging at my ink.” I unbuttoned the pearl snaps on my shirt to reveal the extensive piece on my chest. “This isn't bad.” “Yeah for your first piece. Now that you’ve started coming to me, I’ve fixed you up. You look legit.” “Okay, you win, Frankie. You’re the best and you fucking know it.” He laughed. “Of course I am.” Frankie sat down on his stool and wheeled over, his eyes trailing to my neck. “We have a piece here on the side where we could mix something in with the flora.” “It’s not floral. It’s leaves. Badass leaves.” “Yeah, yeah, pretty boy. You call them whatever helps you sleep at night.” He ran his thumb along the side of my neck before he pulled a spray bottle from the cart and sprayed the disinfectant on me. “Yeah. I think we could do something nice here.” I closed my eyes. “All right. I trust you as long as you don’t give me a fucking bald eagle.” He laughed. “No promises, cuz.” The hum of the needle was like a lullaby. As soon as the needle hit my skin I had to bite my lip to hold back a sigh. The pain that the delicate hum brought was always so freeing. Like I could just escape into that ache and not feel anything else. I could forget that I didn’t have a job or some random chick I’d just met was living with me. I could escape the real world and go into my own lull. It was that place between dreaming and being wide awake. I think there’s a name for it, but I just called it my own sweet purgatory that I got to escape to every time I went under the needle. “Okay, Trippy, just finishing up the shading and we’ll be ready to go.” Frankie’s words barely registered as I slowly opened my eyes to get back to the real world. The humming died down and he swiped a towel on my neck. “Okay. I hope you like it because there’s no going back unless we cover it up with a giant flower to go with these other pussy little leaves.” I was going to say something witty back but once he held the mirror up to me, all the air was sucked out of my lungs and all I could do was stare at the work on my neck. Flying up toward toward my chin was a swallow, but instead of being traced in black or with the rainbow of colors of the flowers and vines on my neck it was recessed and shaded with white and brown. In a world of color it stood out like it was rising from whatever was holding it and dared to be different. ONLY series banner

"Do I frighten you?" My voice came out lower than I intended. A cross between a growl and a whisper. I put my hands on the counter behind her, splaying my fingers out so my pinky and thumb barely touched her. She licked her lips and shook her head. "No." I leaned in closer, pressing myself against her. She tilted her chin back, never taking her eyes off mine. I tried to focus on her intense stare instead of letting my gaze trail to her pink lips and the sparrow tattoos on her collar bone. "Most girls in your situation would either want to fight me or fuck me. The look in your eyes says you want a little bit of both." I pushed a fallen strand of her red hair behind her ear and trailed my finger down her cheek. A small smile crossed her lips. "Maybe I do." I leaned in closer so that my breath tickled her lips. "What would you do if I asked to kiss you right now?" She gripped the front of my shirt and pulled me to her. "I’d tell you not to be a pussy and just fucking kiss me." She crushed her lips to mine and an involuntary growl parted my lips. She nibbled at my bottom lip before her tongue slid against mine. She swirled my tongue ring with hers, claiming my mouth as her own. I wrapped my arms around her waist and then slid my hands lower, cupping her ass and lifting her onto the counter. Her legs pressed against my hips and I could feel her heat against me. God help me if I didn’t want to fuck her right there. ONLY series banner

Isaac plopped down beside her on the bench. “Hey, that’s a cute puppy. I’m adding him to my list,” he declared, planting a warm kiss on her cheek, along with an icy cold cup of frozen coffee goodness in her hands. Xoey wasn’t sure which was making her shiver. “You have over two dozen dogs on that list of yours. Unless your future wife is Mrs. Doolittle, you’re going to have to start making some cuts to your future white picket fence pet,” she replied in an impressively steady tone. It had taken awhile after their break-up, but with time, Isaac’s lips on her skin no longer made her punch-drunk with lust. Not outwardly, at least. Sipping his piping hot black coffee, he nodded over at the fancy iced mocha drink he’d brought for her—or as he liked to call it, the milk and sugar with a splash of caffeine—and gave her a smug smile as he reached for the bag of doughnuts she’d brought for their breakfast. The man knew her frighteningly well. It had begun as a game a while back. He’d guess what she was selecting for their little weekly breakfast picnic, and bring the drinks he knew would pair with it. In the last few months, he’d only been wrong once. Isaac munched on a doughnut thoughtfully and watched the puppy in question flopping along next to the engaged couple. “Nope, that one’s too cute. He’s staying on the list.” With a half shrug, he concluded, “I guess that means I’ll have to marry Mrs. Doolittle.” Xoey was just plain shocked at the sharp bolt of pain she felt tearing through her chest over the joke. “Hey, you okay, sweetie?” Isaac squeezed her knee, a worried gaze running over her face and then lower. To where her hand was pressed against her heart. “Heartburn,” she fibbed, rubbing her chest the way she saw folks on antacid commercials do it. Instantly, her bag of bacon doughnuts were yanked off her lap. “I knew these things were bad for you. You’re calling your doctor in the morning to get a check-up. Sometimes, heartburn is a symptom of something dangerous. In the meantime, I’m going to set you up with one of my trainers to get you on a cardio plan.” Reaching into her pocket, he pulled out her phone and entered her password to unlock it. She peered over and saw him googling something. “What are you doing?” “Checking to see if these cups of liquid sugar and caffeine over ice you drink can cause heart problems.” He read through the results for a minute and shook his head. “Apparently not, but better to switch to tea or just plain water to be safe.” Intense hazel eyes proceeded to x-ray every inch of her body, while gentle, utterly masculine hands that every inch of her body still remembered stroked her back. She released a jagged breath. Which of course, he interpreted as her final descent toward the big, bright light at the end of the tunnel. He gripped her hand. “Do you want me to take you to urgent care or the ER?” “I’m fine, Isaac. Calm down.” He did not look convinced. He then proceeded to slide his fingers over to her wrist to check her pulse. Oh God, the man was just too lovable sometimes. “I lied, I don’t have heartburn,” she admitted, to stop what was clearly going to be a call to 911 in a bit. A puzzled frown crossed his features, along with marked relief. “What’s going on, Xo?” “I just…I was holding my heart because I was jealous. Of Mrs. Doolittle.” She snatched back her precious bacon doughnuts. “If you go off and have a few dozen puppies with Mrs. Doolittle, who’s going to come to the dog park with me every morning?” she threw in to make this less of a declaration of the heart. “I’m too old and set in my ways to break in a new weird friend who’ll get me the way you do.” Silence. Until warm, calloused fingers reached over and broke a piece of doughnut off. After a few quiet moments of chewing, Isaac put his arm around her. “Can you imagine the industrial sized pooper scooper I’d have to buy to pick up after a few dozen dogs?” He shook his head. “I think Mrs. Doolittle and I would be doomed within the first week,” he lamented gravely. “Looks like you’ll be stuck with me for a bit longer, babe.” Improbable promise coming from a catch like Isaac or not, Xoey held on to it tight like a security blanket.

Xoey pulled back and smothered a grimace when she saw it was Sienna’s blind date fix-up for her, aka Mr. Octopus Hands. Great. “Griffin, hi. How are you?” she offered genially. “Can’t complain,” replied an even louder than she remembered Griffin, who had on a top shelf whiskey slap-happy grin on his face as he swung his glance from her to Isaac. “So you two are dating now? Congrats. Small world. Though I guess I shouldn’t be surprised since you both know Quinn and Luke.” He slung an arm around Isaac’s shoulder. “I don’t say this often but in this case, it’s the truth. I couldn’t have lost out to a better guy.” Lost out? Griffin hadn’t even been a contender. Her thoughts must have been showing through on her expression because Isaac’s mouth twitched up into a tiny grin. Xoey found herself smiling as well, momentarily giving Mr. Octopus Hands a pass for everything he’d done to earn that moniker. He had her and Isaac smiling again. That had to count for something. So she smiled politely as he continued to disprove the myth that folks don’t actually talk like they do on TV crime shows. “I’m telling you,” continued Griffin. “This guy is the greatest. He saved my ass more than a few times back in business school. Am I right?” He triple-patted Isaac’s cheek in that mafia sort of way. Huh, maybe the guy was just handsy with everyone. Suddenly, his ass-pats the other week didn’t seem quite so offensive. “Anyway, I’ll let you two get back to your date.” Griffin gave her a long lost hug. “Xoey, it was so great catching up with you.” Catching up? She wondered what the atmosphere was like on his happy little planet. Must be nice. Another lip twitch came from Isaac. Man, her poker face clearly needed work. “And you.” Griffin did a cheesy double-pointing thing at Isaac. “You, call me so we can go grab drinks one night with all the guys. We miss you, man.” “Yeah, of course. I’ve been pretty broken up about that, too.” Isaac mimicked the double-pointing thing, and Xoey just barely held back a burst of laughter One more triple-pat on Isaac’s cheek and he was off. “You know, I really have no idea why I chose you over him.” Isaac chuckled. “Oh crap,” she sighed. “He’s coming back this way. I think the GPS on his space ship might be broken.” Isaac’s shoulders shook with even more quiet laughter. “Christ, I’ve missed that quick mind of yours.”
