Obscured
By C.M. Boers

 My Review 3.5 stars
The story starts with Abby struggling with moving to a new state after her parents split up. New school, new friends and not getting to see her dad much due to distance, on top of it her mom seems to be completely absent as she too is adjusting to the new move, new job and new to dating again after the divorce. So the story follows how Abby handles things with the move and adjusting to the avid attentions of not just one, but 2 boys. Little does she know how complicated it's really going to get.

This story is written as a young adult novel and I felt that it wasn't bad, but definitely could have been a fantastic story with a few tweaks. There were some parts that I just couldn't get into when reading it and my overall feeling was it was an okay read that could be a great read. But after seeing it was the author's debut novel, I don't doubt that her talents will get better with time. She writes to relate to young adults very well, and you often do feel part of the high school scene.

Excerpt:
Abby Martin was an ordinary girl about to start high school, or so she thought, until she became plagued with nightmares after learning that she would be moving to Arizona with her mother. Stressed doesn't even cover what Abby is feeling when she thinks about trying to make new friends, but to her surprised she is surrounded by a new crowd from day one. She is even drawn to one guy in particular, Pete, but when Eli tries to convince her to stay away, she begins to second guess whether he is the guy for her. Unfortunately, she doesn't heed his warnings and finds out too late he was right all along. What's more is Eli isn't who she thought he was either. Immortality, kidnapping, and gifts are now swirling through her mind. The deeper she dives into learning of Eli's world she finds herself more confused and in trouble. And to top things off Abby suddenly can't stop thinking of Eli, her Protector, in a whole new light, is that love she's feeling? Abby and Eli get in over their heads when Pete is plotting against them, but who will come out on top?

About the Author:

Obscured  was C. M.'s debut novel. What began as a way to spend her free time slowly transitioned into a passion for writing. She's currently working on releasing her second novel, Divulge. The best is yet to come!

C. M. is a mother of three. She grew up in the sunshine state of Arizona with a love of reading and an ambition to write. But never took her writing seriously until after the birth of her first child. After that she took up writing more seriously in her spare time and hasn't stopped since.

The Summer Diary
By Elyse Douglas

My Review! 4.5 stars!

When you grow up with a best friend, you believe there are no secrets between the two of you, but as in the The Summer Diary, Kerry finds her friend Sophia kept a few. Kerry is given Sophia's things to sort through after her death and comes across a diary that leads her on a search for a mystery man. It's this search for the mystery man that brings about major changes in her life, following the mystery her friend left for her to discover is just the beginning of the story, and what a way to begin!

The Summer diary is a roller coaster ride of a story and will leave you feeling all sorts of emotions and feelings that you do not expect. On top of that is a beautiful story of love and grief and how to move on in life when you lose someone too soon.

One can not be disappointed if you are looking for a mystery with a love story twist! What a fantastic read and I just could not put this sucker down!

Review! Never Forgotten Love, By Author S.M. Stryker

June 24, 2015

 Never Forgotten Love
Author: S.M. Stryker

About the book:

In this mature romance about lost loves, best friends and second chances author S.M. Stryker brings you the first installment of the Second Chances Series.

Beckett was smaller than most boys his age growing up. This caused him to have little to no self-esteem while faced with the physical abuse he endured at the hands of his mother.

His best friend Harlow, who’s not only beautiful, but tough as nails has been there for him since first grade.

Unforeseen circumstances separated them with promises of always keeping in touch. Reminders of a friendship left behind, possessions taken away only lead to a friendship that was once the center of Beckett’s world.

Ten years later, Beckett has the confidence and self-esteem to search for Harlow. The only problem is; she’s off the grid. Every day he thinks of her, every decision he’s made; has been with for her.

My Review: 4.0 stars
Never Forgotten Love is a story of second chances, the book is written in a Male POV, which makes the story even better.

A sweet love story about best friend who growing up with each other, always had each others back....then life separated them-but not forever. It took ten years, but Beckett and Harlow find their way back to each other and discover that there are second chances, and when you are given that second chance you take it. The fact that Beckett searched high and low to find Harlow, yet happened upon her in the most kismet way just clicked with their story.

This is a love story that is different from most other's, it has an amazing feel good feeling to it, in Harlow and Beckett finding each other again was the way it was always going to be for them. They needed time apart to experience the hard knocks of life and some tragedy in order to come back together to be stronger then before.

Excerpt:
Could you ever believe in second chances? Have you ever wanted something so bad that when it was gone you never forgot it? You longed for it, everything you do was in preparation to have it again, and this time you won't let it go. You would do anything to protect it.
I kissed Harlow on the cheek, wiped away the tears that were falling and I leaned in close to her ear inhaling her floral fragrance that was all Harlow one last time trying to imprint it in my mind, and then I whispered in her ear, "I love you."

I'm not running from something, I'm running to someone. God, Beckett, don't you see, you're my lifeline; I'm not running from you, I running to you."

"This was the place where I fell in love with you Harlow, and even though I had a lot of bad memories here, I had the best memories here too. Memories of when we would sit on the swings and talk about the future when times were innocent, what do you want now Harlow? What are your dreams for the future?"

"You have infiltrated me completely, you make me feel alive Harlow, and I love that feeling. I have had my heart walled off for so long, and you have melted it so I can feel again."

Author Interview-Bree Darcy, Don't Mention the Rock Star

June 24, 2015

Bree Darcy
Don't Mention the Rock Star

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

I am an Australian freelance journalist who runs the Chicklit Club website. I read a lot of chick lit, watch way too much reality TV and don't like being too far away from the beach. My debut novel, Don't Mention the Rock Star, was released in January - a month after I left my job on a daily newspaper.
Tell us about Don’t Mention the Rock Star.

It's about the power of first love and second chances. Kellie is living what many would consider an enviable life. As a gossip reporter she gets to mingle with the rich and famous, she has two teenage kids and is married to a man who prides himself on providing well for his family. But Kellie is hiding a little secret– she used to be madly in love with rock star AJ Dangerfield, aka Andy. And now that first boyfriend is about to crash back into her life.

What happened to your first love?

I married him! We'd known each other all through school but didn't get together until we were nineteen. It's hard for me to imagine what it would be like to be with someone who doesn't know everything about your background. But my husband is absolutely nothing like either Curtis or Andy from my book.

Who is your favourite rock star?

I have been through many phases of musical crushes in my lifetime - from the Village People to Duran Duran and Robbie Williams - but my current idol is Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer of Green Day. Can't express how much I love that band!

Which fictional character would you most like to meet?

Can I pick a group instead? I’d choose to have a coffee in Central Perk with Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler and Joey. Actually I don’t drink coffee but it would still be fantastic to hang out with those Friends.

Was there an author or book series that started your love of reading?

Probably like millions of others out there it was Enid Blyton, hands down. From Noddy and Adventures of the Wishing Chair, to Amelia Jane and The Naughtiest Girl in the School, to the Famous Five and Secret Seven, I loved them all and read them over and over again. Apparently a film with the Magic Faraway Tree characters is under way. Can’t wait to see who plays Moonface and Saucepan Man.

What are you working on at the moment?

I have two projects on the go. One is my next novel, Evie Seizes the Day. It's essentially about a downtrodden HR staffer who comes to the end of her tether so she ditches work for the day. It's like a Ferris Bueller for grown-ups. I wasn't intending to put much romance in it but there's a gorgeous character who keeps popping up and demanding more and more face time. I am also working on a non-fiction book -  a guide for writers about what they need to do when they type THE END.

For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paperbacks?

I find the reading experience is more relaxed with a paperback and less taxing on the eye but I read far more ebooks these days. As a book reviewer, I love the fact that I can access new titles much quicker - and don't have to wait for them to be sent to me here in Australia. Swiping across a screen is now so engrained that I sometimes find myself doing that across a page when I have a real book in my hand!

About the book:
They fell in love in an instant … so why have they spent a lifetime apart?
As a teenager Kellie dated an American boy but circumstances meant they went their separate ways. Now he’s back and she’s so tempted to see him again. But two decades have passed and they are both married with children.
And the last thing a celebrity reporter like her needs is the world finding out about her past relationship with a rock star. Especially as Kellie’s husband doesn’t even know she once dated AJ Dangerfield, lead singer of legendary band Danger Game. And she has no intention of him finding out. EVER.
As Kellie deals with a demanding boss, a bullied son, an infuriating mother-in-law and a best friend who won’t act her age, she finds herself playing a dangerous game. What will happen if her two worlds collide? And is it possible that first love never fades?

Review! Underwater Secrets By E.J. Hanagan

June 23, 2015

Underwater Secrets
By E.J. Hanagan

About the Book:
A mysterious photo of a handsome stranger. A forgotten china set tucked away in the corner of the attic...

Claire Fitzgerald is already struggling to live up to the perfect people around her when she's faced with her mother's death. While sifting through the pieces of her mother's past, she discovers a need to reconcile her memories of a woman she idolized with the truth of who she really was.

Alternating between generations and intertwining the stories of Claire and her mother, Underwater Secrets teaches that sometimes the key to loving ourselves involves learning to love the people around us, quirks and all.

My Review:
4.5 stars!

Claire has just lost her mother and her whole world seems to no longer makes sense. She resents the close relationship her husband has with her daughter and without her mom to guide her doesn't seem to know how to bridge the gap that she has with her little girl. On top of that she becomes deeply in-delved into the mystery of her mother's life during the years before she married Claire's father and started a family. She finds the remains of a marriage never mention, of her mother moving to a place she never knew she had lived and a house on a lake that seemed to be a huge part of her mother's growing up, yet never a word was spoken about any of it.

Perhaps this is Claire's way of keeping a part of her mother alive, learning the secrets of her past or perhaps her mother needed her to learn a few things for Claire to be able move forward in her life after the loss of her. A mother's love is so strong that even after death she may just be guiding Claire through a journey to help her cope with losing her mom to soon. As well as remind her what a blessing it is to be a mom and how overcome the insecurities she faces with her parenting and life.

This was a wonderful read, at the beginning I struggled with the jumps into the past with Claire's mom and back to present with Claire, but it didn't take long reading the book to understand the purpose of it and it in no way took away from the story told.

Excerpt :
“Damn it!”  Claire shouted again as she stumbled over a rectangular box of pictures.  The box tipped onto its side as a batch of photos splayed out before her like a deck of cards.   Resting on Claire’s right foot was a white-rimmed black and white photo.
As she reached down to pick it up, she saw a familiar face staring back at her.  As if looking in a mirror, Claire tugged at the edges of her own brown, jagged hair and fluffed her bangs, letting them fall into delicate little wisps framing her face. The same dark blue eyes gazed back at her, the only difference being the tiny brown flecks that were sprinkled on Claire’s as if an afterthought.  Even in black and white, the blue stood out, dark against the woman’s skin.  Her brown hair, parted on the side, rested at her chin, cut into a classic bob just a few inches shorter than Claire’s own length.  Its ends were curled under, framing her face like a custom-fitted wig.  Claire coveted her seductive side-swept bangs, now back in fashion, which contrasted the modest button-down shirt that Emelia wore in the photo.  Her long, thin, sun-kissed legs stemmed from a pair of checkered high-waisted short shorts.  They were crossed and angled, a pair of platform sandals lacing up the ankles, one brushing the thigh of the man sitting next to her.  Her face was contorted into a bright, carefree smile, on the verge of laughter.   A delicate hand rested on the man’s shoulder like she was trying to stop herself from falling over from so much happiness.  They sat on a wooden bench framed by trees that looked like they were reaching toward them.  Behind them sat a massive rock with two striped towels spread out as if they had been sunbathed on not long before the photo was taken.
The man next to Emelia was strikingly handsome, with a chiseled jawline that looked like it was molded from a movie star’s face.  Straight, dirty blond hair swept flawlessly across his forehead, making him appear just disheveled enough not to be intimidating.  The hair that fell onto his forehead highlighted a set of eyes that were similar to Emelia’s in the way they were deep set and spaced.  Claire could only assume that they were the same deep blue as her mother’s because everything else about the two of them seemed to be parallel.  They seemed like they were one of those couples that started to look like one another, as if staring at the same face everyday somehow made you absorb their features as your own.  His shorts seemed short for a man, but he managed to look good in them with his runner-shaped legs dangling over the edge of
the bench, two bare feet touching the tips of the grass.  He was angled toward Emelia, clearly in on the same joke, as one hand touched her knee.  The top few buttons on his shirt were undone, revealing the type of smooth chest men nowadays paid good money for.  Despite his youthful, athletic form, laugh lines stemmed from his eyes, showing time spent in the sun.  Emelia had always been a pro at hiding her laugh lines with concealer.

My Review: 4.5 stars

Crown of Smoke is Snowa Fox's debut novel, and what a great book to hit the ground running with! The author has created a fantasy world that you won't be able to resist falling in love with, along with characters so well developed you can't help be passionate about the feeling you have for them. Crown of Smoke is a fast paced story that will keep you intrigued until the end and leave you wanting more!

The book is based on a world called Lucidity, the world where our Dream Guardians live. The author gives amazing details about Lucidity, well enough that the reader can truly imagine this place and is allowed to delve right into the story.

The characters are great, Vaughn, Lila's Dream Guardian is also the set to inherit the Crown as he is the Prince of Lucidity; Vaughn is what every girl would want as their guardian as he is a major hunk, but he also has a serious side. As I said before each character Vaughn and Lila included are so well developed you quickly find yourself loving or hating them as you move through the story. The author does an amazing job at invoking emotions from the reader with her characters and their personalities.

On top of a great fantasy story but the author includes some great action scenes, a great mystery, a lot of fighting and a bit of love all rolled into one book, and I believe this is just the beginning~

 ✢ EXCERPT from SEEKER ✢
It was time to pull myself together and slink out of this bathroom to face Jack; if he was even waiting for me. He most likely lost interest and retreated back to class. I splashed water on my face and tried vainly to tame my obnoxious, curly red hair and exited the bathroom. To my surprise, Jack was leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets, staring at the ground. He looked up and smiled slightly at me, one corner of his attractive mouth inching higher than the other. His big, nearly black eyes were full of concern as he asked, “You feeling better? I thought maybe you were gonna puke all over the place back there.”
Perfect. Exactly what I wanted him to think of in connection with me: the girl who looked like she was going to puke. “No, I’m fine. I needed to get away from the Wikipedia re-hash, that’s all. Thanks for the escape.” I tried to scoot by him.
He laughed a bit under his breath and reached out, gently grabbing my arm as I passed. “Hey, don’t run off. You looked really upset. I want to make sure you’re all right. Besides, Ms. Gonzalez thinks we’re at the nurse. No need to rush back for more coma-inducing book reports. I’m Jack, by the way. Jack Ruiz.” He pulled me directly in front of him and again examined my face. An intoxicating aroma wafted to me from his warm skin; a sort of warm, spicy scent that instantly became my new favorite. I might have swayed toward him a bit.
“Yeah, I know, Jack. I’ve been handing your papers back all semester.” I struggled to sound unaffected.
He nodded. “You still look really pale, Ally. And you seem a bit unsteady. Sure you’re not gonna puke?”
Really? Why me, God? I stood up straight and gently shrugged off his hand. “Yes. I had a, uh…a moment. I’m okay. Thanks for getting me out of there.” His dark eyes looked like melted dark chocolate. Life is so not fair. On the bright side, he actually knows my name. I wouldn’t have bet on that. I’m not the kind of girl who stands out—well, except for the crazy red hair—or attracts much attention. I’m short and small, wear really plain clothes, and I don’t say very much at school. I have a few good friends and we pretty much fly below the radar and try to stay out of the limelight. I like it that way. High school seriously sucks and I just want to get through it quietly and without a lot of drama. Please, God, life will be better in college.
“So, this is gonna sound pretty weird,” Jack started hesitantly, “but, uh, when it got really hot in the classroom, it, well it kinda felt like it was, uh, emanating from you.” He laughed once, quietly. “That’s crazy, huh?”
Wow. Did he just use the word “emanating” in a sentence? Who does that? I mean, in high school? I wonder what he got on his ACT? I had always had the sense there was more to him than meets the eye, and this cemented that feeling.

   PURCHASE BOOK TWO: #DREAMER

 ✢ EXCERPT from DREAMER ✢
“Ally? Hey, what’s up? You got real quiet all of a sudden. Not a good quiet, either. What are you thinking?”
I shook my head. “No, it’s nothing. I get it. I understand.”
He looked at me for minute and then sighed. He got up and came around to my side of the booth and took me in his arms and kissed the top of my head. “You’ve got that look on your face. You know, the one that says you think I’m not going to be able to handle any more weird stuff and this is it for us. Huh? Admit it—it’s what you were thinking, isn’t it?” I nodded, trying to keep the tears in. “Okay, look at me.” He pulled my face up to look directly in my eyes. I could stare into his beautiful, deep brown eyes all day. “First, and most importantly, I love you, Ally. I’m in this for the long haul, no matter how freaky things get. If it means I get you, then count me in. You gotta start believing in us, babe.” He stopped to kiss me briefly and thank the waitress for refilling our coffee cups. “Secondly, you’re giving me, and all guys in general actually, way too much credit for deep thinking. When I say ‘what the hell is an oracle?’ that’s all I mean. No hidden meaning. I just want to know what it is. Guys are actually pretty simple and we tend to say exactly what we mean.” He kissed me again and then returned to his side of the table, placing a napkin in my hand so I could mop my face. Poor guy: it seems like all he ever did was watch me cry. I was such a girl. “Now let’s finish eating while you tell me all about this oracle stuff, okay?”
So I wiped my eyes and told him about how the Seer Council had tricked me into believing they were simply a group of innocent little old lady gardeners, but they actually held my fate in their hands. I told him about the last Oracle being stolen away from her people by the Gaulish clan, never to be heard from again. And I told him how the council was very interested in my abilities to see the future and seemed to think it was possible evidence of my oracle-ness or whatever. I finished with, “And they didn’t want to even let me go. They made me promise to come back over spring break and in the summer.”
“Spring break? Ah, Ally, no. I can’t stand not having our last school vacation together. You gotta tell them no, querida. I’ll probably go nuts if you’re gone.”
“Don’t worry. There is no way I’m going back over spring break. I’ll go in the summer as long as it’s while you’re gone to basic training.” I grabbed his hand across the table and rubbed my thumb over his knuckles. I told him what the council had told me about oracles, how they were messengers between worlds or something.
“Ally, what do you think? Do you think you could be this oracle?” He looked at me with concern.
“I don’t know, Jack. I think there’s a lot more to the story than what they’re telling me. I don’t trust those little old garden-seer ladies. I can’t even think about being an Oracle before I know what’s really going on.”
“That was a very Oracle-like thing to say,” he said with a laugh.
“Shut up.” I smiled. “Does this lunch include pie?”
