She survived school by hiding out in the library, with several thousand fictional characters for company. At university, she overcame the boredom of studying accountancy by squeezing in Egyptology papers and learning to read hieroglyphics.

This story is a bit of Cinderella and Zombie's. Ella is forced to serve as a servant to her stepmother and stepsisters, while caring for her father who came home suffering from war wounds that leaving him unresponsive and on top of that, the town as deemed her as the unofficial Zombie slayer. All while trying to keep her father's estate from going down the drain from the extravagant expenses of her stepmother and sisters. Leaving Ella with no doubt that she is destined to live a life of serving those that look down on her because her mother was a maid.
But then along comes Seth Demage the Duke-returned home to take his father's place after the plague and succumbing to the undead disease. Seth makes her question her stance on being stuck in a life of servitude. Seth gives her the chance to see what a different future could be like.
The similarity to the well known Cinderella story through me off during the first of the book, however the added twist (Zombie's attacking the ball will do that) helped make this a story of his own and I really got into the story after my I was able to see to the unique twist the author went with. This was a fun story-I am a sucker for a good zombie story and this one definitely appeased me on that front!
